Day 46

Chubby Art Challenge

I am Amazing!

About the Painting
"I am Amazing!" is an Original Mixed Media 3D Sculptural Relief Chubby Art Painting by Alison Galvan created with Sculptamold, a Paper & Gypsum product, & painted with professional Artist grade Acrylics on a 5" X 7" inch gallery quality wood panel.
Just as each message has great meaning for me personally and is created with a lot of thought, so each letter is lovingly sculpted by hand, dried, individually painted, and mounted onto a whimsically decorated wood panel.
I am a positive person.  I like to laugh much and often, but lately when I look at what we surround ourselves with I shake my head, no wonder we are so screwed up.  TV shows that glorify adultery, movies whose themes revolve around the dark side of humanity, video games that focus on theft and murder, newscasts of bombing and mayhem and art and music that depicts subjects that make me want to cry and go into a deep depression.  What are we doing to ourselves?
I believe our thoughts are things and while I've never thought of myself as a loopy, way out there, head in the clouds artsy fartsy type, I do think that if I create positive, inspiring, happy work, I can make a change certainly in my own world, but hopefully in your world too.
What kind of world do you want to live in?  Let's create a happier one together!
"I am Amazing!" is signed and dated on the back of the painting.  It is wired and can be hung immediately or framed and then hung, whichever is your preference.

All Chubby Art is varnished to protect it from dust and UV rays.
*Note: I am open to commissioned work.  If you would like a particular idea sculpted and painted please contact me here to discuss your ideas further.

Artist Statement
People think of our daily comings and goings as simply boring routine, but for me, I call it fabulous inspiration. Observing the world around me, I see life as one would imagine it on an old fashioned movie reel. The lights turned out, a box of popcorn on my lap and as the projector whirs and clicks frame after frame lights up the screen with ridiculous characters acting out wonderfully hysterical situations. And while mundane, if we stop and really observe the everyday we find ourselves relating to the humour of the event, or the beauty, fear, or joy. It is from these moments, like stilled scenes captured from the movie reel, that my artwork is born.
Working 3 dimensionally with my hands molding the paper and gypsum sculpting compound connects me both intellectually and tangibly to the richness of each character. As I sculpt, building up and cutting away, exaggerating proportions, expressions and fashions, my goal is to capture the power in the personality of the people and things the sculpture portrays. Bold colours complete each piece adding a sense of strength and vibrant energy that animates each scene bringing it to life.
My artwork is a reflection of my desire to see the humour in the everyday experience, finding joy in the small things. Through my artistic vignettes I want to uplift, transform and bring a little laughter into the world. There are stories to be told and I have a passion to tell them!
Artist Bio
With limited artistic experience in high school and almost zero drawing skills, I persevered with my creative ambitions earning a Fine Arts Degree at Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris, graduating in 1993 with a major in Fashion Design. On returning home to British Columbia, Canada I began my own business designing and manufacturing children’s clothes, selling to stores in Western Canada and Toronto. Marrying in 1996, I switched gears, devoting all my time and energies to raising and homeschooling my two children. While a busy mother, I contributed to the family finances creating two online shops selling plus size lingerie, and Asian statues. Now, with children grown to independence, I have decided to once again explore my artistic passion, taking on the challenges of working 3 dimensionally, an interest sparked in university. My Sculptures and 3D Relief Paintings are all about capturing the funny moments and ridiculous characters that fill up our daily experience. Happy and joyful, the subjects and colors are a reflection of my desire to create artwork that brings warmth and humor into any space in which it is displayed.
