Blue, Yellow, & Green Inspirational Quote Chubby Art Relief Painting

Day 78

Chubby Art Challenge

Be Brave
I was trying something new with this piece, new colour and new style.  At first I hated it, but now it's starting to grow on me and that's why I chose to have this "Happy Thought" say Be Brave. I wanted to try something I haven't done much of, but that took me out of my comfort zone and I nearly gave up, painted over the whole thing and retreated to what felt safe.  Instead I stuck it out and now I'll admit to being satisfied, if a little unsettled still with the final product.
“Be Brave" is an Original Contemporary Folk Art Mixed Media Relief Inspirational Chubby Art Painting by Alison Galvan.
Just as each message has great meaning for me personally and is created with great care and thought, so each letter has been lovingly sculpted by hand utilizing Sculptamold, a Paper& Gypsum product. Once completely dried, the letters are then meticulously hand painted with Professional Artist Grade Acrylics, and finally, firmly mounted onto a whimsically painted, naively styled 5” x 7” Gallery quality wood panel.
These petite, loving messages are perfect for a child's room, guest, or family room, office, or in any space in which one may find need of inspiration and positive affirmation.

Blue Sky & Sunny Orange Inspirational Quote Relief Painting

Day 74

Chubby Art Challenge

Expect Success

I wanted to keep this piece simple because I believe the message should be equally simple.  We should expect success, but how many times do we start out with the idea that "this probably won't work." We have got to change our thinking!

Day 73

Chubby Art Challenge

Embrace Success

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Green Grass & a Blue & Yellow Inspirational Quote on 5x7 Folk Art Relief Painting

Day 72

Chubby Art Challenge

Keep Learning

Just as grass perpetually grows, more so when nurtured with water, sun, and fertilizer, so to should we no matter our age.  The blue and yellow letters reflect my love of those little flowers called Forget-Me-Nots.  I'm sure to many they are considered a weed, but I have always loved them for their colour combination and delicate size.

A SeeSaw of Emotions

So this weekend saw me swing from

the depths of despair to the heights of excitement.

First let me start with the bad stuff and get that out of the way....

As I mentioned in one of my earlier blog posts, I've been lucky enough to have my work considered good enough to be a finalist in the upcoming show entitled Inspired Art 2012 at Studio 1219 in Port Huron, Michigan - woohoo!

(Here's my work that's made it to the finals.  It is titled Endurance)

So off I went to my local shipping company's store and paid for my work to be professionally packaged and shipped to the gallery.

That was last month.

Now, this last Friday, at about 2 o'clock in the  afternoon I got an email telling me that, yipee!, the gallery had received my work, thought it was great, but, oops, my piece had been damaged in transit, and could I nip by to do a little repairs?

Talk about throwing me into a tailspin!

Port Huron is about 3 1/2 hours from where I live, and across the border.  I need my passport to get there and,  of course, my passport is being renewed and I don't have it - groan!  So off I ran to the passport office 15 minutes before they closed on Friday afternoon and begged them to speed up the process.  Luckily they understood and I can pick up my new passport this week thereby making it possible for me to be up and out the door early Saturday morning to drive all the way to Port Huron, do the repairs and drive all the way back, making it back home by 4pm - hopefully.

I've seen photos and the damage, while ugly, is fixable so all should be okay, but so much for a relaxing weekend - Aaaargh!

Now the Good News...

Last night I delivered to LucSculpture School and Studios in Toronto (663 Greenwood Ave.) one of my sculptures entitled "Leap of Faith" for a show they are having April 17-28th, 2012 called Awakenings.  The opening reception is on Thursday April 19th.
This is my first show in Toronto.  A milestone for me - hope to see you there!

Hiatus Over! The Chocolate Race Commission Finally Finished!

I'm Back

I was flipping out trying to do my daily sculpting / painting challenge, Chocolate Race commission, work full-time, and be a wife and mother to two teens.  Needless to say I was doing none of the above well, and more than that, I was becoming a grumpy, stressed out B#$%^&.
Definitely not pretty!
So I took a week off from my daily challenge work and focused wholeheartedly on my 4 Chocolate Race paintings and today I finished!  You can see them in The Chocolate Race put on by Dirty Runner Productions held in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Ontario on Sunday April 29th.

Here's a sneak peak!

Stay tuned... more exciting chubbyartnews of gallery showings and competitions coming up!

Day 69

Chubby Art Challenge

I Determine My Value

"I would have forgiven men for my struggle," said Richard Halley.  "It was their view of my success that I could not forgive.  I had felt no hatred in all the years when they rejected me.  If my work was new, I had to give them time to learn, if I took pride in being first to break a trail to a height of my own, I had no right to complain if others were slow to follow.  That was what I had told myself through all those years... Then, on the night when they chose to cheer, me I stood before them on the stage of a theater, thinking that this was the moment I had struggled to reach, wishing to feel it, but feeling nothing.... If they had said, "Sorry to be so late, thank you for waiting"  I would have asked nothing else  and they could have had anything I had to give them.  But what I saw in their faces, and in the way they spoke when they crowed to praise me, was the thing I had heard being preached to artists...  They seemed to say that they owed me nothing, that their deafness had provided me with a moral goal, that it had been my duty to struggle, to suffer, to bear - for their sake - whatever sneers, contempt, injustice, torture they chose to inflict upon me, to bear it in order to teach them to enjoy my work, that this was their rightful due and my proper purpose.    And then I understood the nature of the looter-in-spirit, a thing I have never been able to conceive...I saw the impertinent malice of mediocrity boastfully holding up its own emptiness as an abyss to be filled by the bodies of its betters - I saw them seeking.... to feed on those hours when I wrote my music and on that which made me write it, seeking to gnaw their way to self-esteem by extorting from me the admission that they were the goal of my music, so that precisely by reason of my achievement, it would not be they who'd acknowledge my value, but I who would bow to theirs... It was on that night that I took the oath never to let them hear another note of mine..."
A quote from musician Richard Halley, a character in the book, Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand

USE YOUR BRAIN a 5x7 Motivational Contemporary Folk Art Relief Painting

Day 68

Chubby Art Challenge

Use Your Brain
“Art is unique, new, and challenging to the status quo. It’s not decoration, it’s something that causes change.” Author Seth Godin

There is a fine line for artists between creating the art that juices you and creating art that is commercially viable and pays the mortgage.  If an artist is lucky enough one is the same as the other, but for most these two paths diverge and never meet. The above quote by Author Seth Godin reminds me that while I am doing this Chubby Art Challenge, creating work that is far more "commercial" rather than Fine Art, I still need to keep working on my more creative wild and crazy endeavors  because as he implies, as an artist one should always be striving to push their limits creating that which breaks them out, and consequently their audience out of the Status Quo.

"Use Your Brain" is a 5" x 7"  Contemporary Folk Art Original Relief Chubby Art Painting by Alison Galvan. The letters are sculpted with Sculptamold, a paper and gypsum compound and the painted with professional artist grade acrylics and mounted on a gallery wrapped canvas.
Wired, Use Your Brain can be hung immediately or simply placed upon a shelf for all to enjoy.

Day 66

Chubby Art Challenge

Brains = Power

Choosing soft colours for this piece I wanted to portray the idea that one can be both feminine, but at the same time, as the message states, smart and powerful.  One does not have to be a ball crushing B!@#$ to be successful, but at the same time one doesn't have to be soft, tender, maternal and stupid.  As women - daughters, sisters, mothers and wives we can be both things, and that's what I think is the real meaning of well-rounded!

The Colour Brown - How does it us affect us?

How does the colour Brown affect us?

Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.
